Reconstruction

Let’s not pretend anymore.

This world isn’t a safe haven

Or a place we can call holy,

It’s full of pain and fear.

We know we have failed

When children cannot

Feel safe going to school.

We know we have failed

When our girls cannot walk alone at night,

Keys between their knuckles and

Fingers on the call button.

We know we have failed

When people of different ethnicities

Are afraid of being pulled over,

Their cars breaking down,

Hands in pocket,

And even looking “scary”.

This world, no,

This country is in dire need

Of change.

Where people do not fear

Random everyday events.

Change will come in time,

But only when

The people who commit the crimes

Are held responsible.
